Mr. Francisco Márquez Villanueva


PhD in Literature from Seville University. In 1959 he was obliged to leave Spain, transferring to the United States and Canada to become Literature Professor at Harvard University. He spent periods at the University of British Columbia and City University of New York, after which he definitely settled at Harvard, where he holds a life honorary professorship.

Favourite Son of Andalusia (2004), candidate to the ‘Príncipe de Asturias’ Award for Communication and Humanities (2009). He has authored many papers and books on the Jewish and Arabic inputs to Spanish cultures, lecturing all over the world.

He is a member in a number of Academies and Societies in Spain and abroad. He was awarded the Special Prize from the Royal Foundation of Toledo (2004) and the Erasmus Medal of the Accademia Europaea of Sciences (2007), among others.
